McIntyre v Santer

To anybody interested (as I am) in the conflict of McIntyre (denier by proxy) v Santer (objectively pro AGW) (to my mind much more interesting than McIntyre v Mann, which ended somewhat desultorily), the recent RC post by Santer brings on some heavy guns.

To begin at the end, Santer more or less accuses McIntyre of the CRU email theft.

"What Darwin Got Wrong" by Fodor and Piatelli-Palmarini

There's a new book out criticizing evolutionary theory by Jerry Fodor and Massimo Piatelli-Palmarini that's making a splash.

They're both materialist atheists and famous philosophers/cognitive scientists whose work I know pretty well, in the case of Fodor, very well. Fodor in particular is highly distinguished and has done as much anyone in the field in the 70s-90s to shape cognitive science.

In case you're interested, here's an interview of Fodor in Salon: http://www.salon.com/books/evolution/index.html?story=/books/feature/2010/02/22/what_darwin_got_wrong_jerry_fodor

Open Thread: Wood Friday

This is a terrific collection of woodwork design calculators.

Here's a book about the properties of common North American woods and here's a book that helps you identify common domestic and exotic woods. It includes samples of forty different kinds of wood.

The BBC interviews Dr Jones.

A - Do you agree that according to the global temperature record used by the IPCC, the rates of global warming from 1860-1880, 1910-1940 and 1975-1998 were identical?

Dr Jones:...the warming rates for all 4 periods are similar and not statistically significantly different from each other.
---
B - Do you agree that from 1995 to the present there has been no statistically-significant global warming?

Dr Jones:...Yes, but only just.

My Damned Wonderful Doctors...

...Yes, they want to cut on me again, within 30 days. I've looked at the biopsy report and agree that it is necessary to go back in (I mean they even show you the cell structures that are worrisome now, in color).

I am frightened, I have told them I am frightened. I pointed out the problem with John Murtha, the more you're in there, the more simple random chance that something bad will happen....true also especially with Anaesthesia, but, it must be done. Colon cancer ain't no fun, even precursors of CC...lets go dig out everything we can find.

A coal comeback.

Well, well well (via RC).

Isn't this interesting. So now we realise what our neighbours were talking about in Copenhagen. It looks like all the "alternative energy" sources have been decisively outpointed.

An Australian firm has signed a $60bn deal to supply coal to Chinese power stations.

Die Klimazweibel; the climate sceptics blog.

So I've been looking round the net, trying to find a sceptics site that contains facts and/or analysis that could be interpreted as validly overturning current AGW theory, preferably from someone involved with the IPCC reports (someone who knows the scientists and personalities involved), unlike the somewhat ridiculous Lord Monckton.

Monday Fragmented Public Sphere Open Thread

Jurgen Habermas' twitter feed. (!!?!)

But the rise of millions of fragmented discussions across the world tend instead to lead to fragmentation of audiences into isolated publics.

Sorry for not following anyone. I'm still trying to lear how to use this tool. JH

You know what would be a fun project? Translating all of Schopenhauer's (or Walter Benjamin's or whomever else's) aphorisms to twitter.

A new report Contributions of Stratospheric Water Vapor to Decadal Changes in the Rate of Global Warming raises new questions on the current climate models. That is, IPCC's carbon dioxide centric climate models probably need some work.
