The Upgrade to v5.7 is Complete (as far as I can tell)

Just completed the update, it went pretty well. I am glad I did a dry run a week ago, Drupal is free and sometimes, like when doing upgrades, it works about as well as you'd expect something free to work.

There are a few minor issues, the Links across the top of the page don't work and the formatting in the "Recent Diaries" block on the right is a little off. You will also need to reset your default view (# of comments per page, threaded or flat, forward or reverse date order).

I'd appreciate it if everyone could use this diary to post any problems or unexpected actions that they see over the next few days.

Also, feel free to post requests or suggestions, since corky volunteered and he appears to know a lot more about PHP and CSS than I do so we should be able to implement more ideas. I will say that I'm trying to stay away from extensive customization as it makes maintenance and upgrades more difficult. The good news is that v5.7 has a lot more features available, and even more so with v6.1. The upgrade to v6.1 is at least 2 months away, and I'd actually guess closer to 6 months based on how fast some key modules have been advancing.

...

EDIT: I've been noticing some strange login issues on my account, please let me know if anyone else is seeing similar issues.

And thanks again to both you and Corky.

What does a Creative Commons license mean, in real terms? (#90769)
by mmghosh

I write occasionally for an online newsmagazine, and was hoping to add some of forvm's comments as a flavour of views from the US on various issues - with attributions, of course.

Is that legally OK?

Edit: I'm trying to get some of my acquaintances in China to comment on here. I think they have a very different perspective.

Oh, and I forgot to add (#90992)

it's very interesting to have a non-US point of view here, if you could encourage friends from other nations to post here it would be even more awesome.

The Ceative Commons link (#90985)
by HankP

describes their licensing, that was put in at the start of the site and I need to look into it. My guess is that we'd pick a license that allows copying with attribution but doesn't allow modification, i.e. you can quote whatever you want from the site as long as you give attribution and don't change it. I'll look into it and maybe post a diary about the choices with a poll to enable voting.

Small bug report (#90332)
by Macallan

Perhaps someone else already reported it, and I missed it so forgive me is this is a repeat.

I use both Firefox and Opera for various purposes, but in both, the user navigation window on the upper right is always labeled with the last person to comment rather than the logged in user name.

Yeah, it's a known problem (#90342)
by HankP

you can scan this diary to see more details. I filed a bug report at drupal.org, but so far no responses.

It's just a cosmetic bug, you're actually still logged in as you, it just displays the wrong username. I haven't found any help or similar bugs yet, since we may get snow here tomorrow I should have some free time to work on it.

OK, but it is more than comestic (#90346)
by Macallan

In that if I click on one items like My account it will say, "access denied" when another user name is displayed. Or right now as I wrote this, Weyland's name is displayed and if I click on "My Blog" it goes to one of Weyland's diaries.

I know you've got too much to do so don't worry I'm not complaining, just wanted to let you know about it.

--

“I serve as a blank screen on which people of vastly different political stripes project their own views.”

Don't worry (#90353)
by HankP

it's not taken as criticism. And honestly, until there are more volunteers I don't really care if it is criticism. Corky seems to know a lot more about these newfangled web server thingies, so hopefully he'll rescue the site from my clumsy ministrations.

The workaround is to click on "Save Settings" in the "Comment Viewing Options" box - clicking on that once or twice seems to set the menu back to the proper username.

Hank: formatting question (#90329)
by Jay C

I see that the automatic formatting icons on the comments box have vanished - not a great loss since I think I can manage the simple format stuff: but does the new version mean that we must use the square-bracket "url=..." formatting for links?

Or will the traditional bracket <> "a href=" still work?

Here's where we stand (#90348)
by HankP

the current version (v5.7) is transitional, we will be moving to v6 as soon as it supports more of the modules we need and is more stable. I'm also planning to redo the theme of the site, basing it on the default theme in v5 and v6. My goal is to keep the site as simple as possible, as easily maintainable as possible, and as easily upgradeable as possible (mostly so if I get hit by a bus others won't have too much trouble picking up where I left off). Corky has been kind enough to offer his help, at this point I'm trying to get the v6 test version up and running so he and I can work on it and come up with an easy modification tracking log (mostly to help with future upgrades). Therefore, I'm not planning on doing a lot of enhancing to the current version, I just want to keep it working well enough so that it doesn't drive people too crazy over the next several months.

Has the Vista rollout being that dramatically unsuccessful overall?

Over here the takeup has been poor. It is interesting to see the forvm's (largely technical) community has not gone for it in any significant way.

I'm using Vista right now (#90264)
by HankP

it came preloaded on the laptop. I use Vista or Linux on this laptop and XP on my office machine.

Those meters don't always record things properly, but I can say that every client of mine that has used Vista has hated it. I don't mind it that much, I just turn off all the Vista features and it's like a slightly slower version of XP.

There has been a lot of resistance to moving to Vista in general, especially from businesses.

The user menu at the right hand side switches my login to a different user. A few minutes ago, it had me as "hankp" - complete with some extra options that normal guys apparently don't get.

Right now, it says I'm "username", and yes, I can go to "My account" and see username's stuff. Haven't tried modifying his stuff yet...

That's the session bug I mentioned earlier (#89974)

it only affects the navigation menu and directory that diaries are posted in. You're actually still logged in as yourself, you can't do anything you couldn't normally do. The workaround is to click on the "save Settings" button in the Comment viewing options, that resets the session back to your name.
