Trim that baby down to 30 seconds, make the whole thing move faster including the music and make the same point in less time, maybe you'd have an ad.

There's def room for a 30 second "McCain is Bush" spot in this election, I'm not really impressed by this one.

Now this is the discussion I was looking for (#109866)
by Bill White

Thanks!

It appears this video was done by one person (#109855)
by Bill White

A freelance political operative, as it were:

Although I enjoyed Barack Obama's recent web ad "Embrace" (the one with lots of hugging between Bush and McCain), I still think the campaign needs to be a little harsher. The idea of a continuation of Bush policies into a third term should be scary, not playful. Furthermore, I think it's important to emphasize that McCain has been "doubling down" on Bush's policies at the same time the rest of the nation (and world) has been abandoning them.

YouTube and viral media distribution empowers the little guy!

Let's not discuss (#109846)
by Bird Dog

This diary parrots Obama/DNC talking points and doesn't add a lick of commentary or analysis. It has zero contributory value. If this site had such a feature, I'd vote this piece of sh*t post into oblivion.

Bird Dog, do you stand by your #95059 comment? (#109901)
by Bill White

May 19, 2008:

Two, if a diarist puts together a skinny and linkless and unsupported post, or even a fat and linkless and unsupported post, then the commenters have every right to point out all those deficiencies, and they have. The diarists are ultimately responsible for their own work product, and their credibility and the influence of their thoughts should be weighed accordingly. I don't think there should any restrictions on length or brevity, other than what's spelled out in the posting rules.

This was in response to my proposal:

Given the high level of interest in the November election, and to facilitate a higher level of discourse here at forvm.org, perhaps we need a new guideline that requires (at a minimum) that overtly political diaries meet this rule taken from Daily Kos:

Diaries should be substantive. A good guideline is that if you don't have at least three [or four - bw] solid paragraphs to write about your subject, you should probably post a comment in an open thread, or in a recent diary or front-page post that covers a topic relevant to what you wish to write about.

One paragraph or one sentence or one link "hit" diaries should be expressly prohibited by such a new rule. Diaries that merely quote from other sites and say "Ain't this cool!" perhaps should also be discouraged or prohibited.

Regular open threads can be created for such forms of expression.

Of course, many of my prior diaries would violate these new rules. However I will readily abide by such a rule going forward provided that others are likewise prohibited from posting variations on the "quickie drive-by" diary that merely seek to instigate a flame-fest in the comments section.

Of note: Both Charlie Black and Randy Schuenemann should be fired.

Hmmm (#109916)
by Bird Dog

There isn't a button to vote posts into oblivion, so the point is moot. I don't think contentless POS posts should be deleted or banned, nor should they be exempted from any manner of criticism that I choose.

We used to be able to vote diaries down (#109923)

But the pwoers that be decided it created too much acrimony.

if you start acting nicer and maybe write some sports diaries you might get elected mod and then you can delete sqb diaries.

Don't be fooled. M. Scott is merely saving up for the autumn.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. :)

(And voting diaries down is a bad idea.)

What about (#109917)
by Gabriel

POS diaries that are not content free but are worse, full of content that is simply wrong because the diarist is writing about technical topics he does not understand?

Should we have a button to vote them into oblivion as well?

And who gets to judge the "worse" part? (#109927)
by Bird Dog

You? In all your insufferable arrogance? At least a contentless diary can be measured. Bill's was exactly one word: Discuss!

Well (#109930)
by Gabriel

If there were a button I guess we'd all judge, individually.

A one-word diary may not be ideal but at least it does not subtract knowledge as would a diary that is based on basic misunderstandings.

You continue to show that you'd rather attack me or impugn my integrity than engage in any sort of substantive dialogue.

--

"I want America to know that I'm, like, totally ready to lead." -- Paris Hilton

Actually (#109900)
by Gabriel

No one's attacking YOU. The problems are your comments. You need to control yourself and avoid posting things like 'piece of sh*t' which only pollutes the site for the rest of us. If you think this is so content-free just skip it, no one is forcing you to read it. Or at least try to make your points without grade-school insults.

--

This place is my vacation.

Typical (#109909)
by Bird Dog

The real problem isn't swear words with asterisks in their proper places, it's propaganda embedded into a new diary with zero content added from the diarist. To me, the latter pollutes this site way more. If the insults bother you, then deal with it.

--

"I want America to know that I'm, like, totally ready to lead." -- Paris Hilton

No (#109912)
by Gabriel

Differing views about what is and what is not propaganda is one of the reasons we are all here to debate.

Childish insults are, well, just childish insults.

As for dealing with your insults, that's OK, I have two small children, I am used to tantrums.

A YouTube from a Democrat political operative... (#109925)

...is not propaganda? Whatever. The insult is richly deserved.

Others may have different opinions.

I have no problems with that.

I was just hoping to keep the tantrums I deal with limited to my children and away from The Forvm.

Oh, Puhleeze (#109926)
by Harley

Anyone who links to Redstate diarists is not allowed to use the word. Seriously. Throwing words like 'propaganda' at opinions you don't like does not do much to refute the opinion or advance your own. Why even use the term?

And So Reality Becomes a Talking Point (#109847)
by Harley

I get that you don't like the numbers. Sorry about that. This does not, however, make them a talking point. Reality's funny that way. And on a day that follows a new McCain ad that criticizes Obama for voting in 'lockstep' with President Bush (40 percent of the time!), this seems wholly appropriate.

And I'd be careful about that site feature you mention. Logorrheic diaries in the service of a poorly founded obsession just might get oblivianized too. Tho' we all like the graphs very much.

--

To think is not enough; you must think of something -- Jules Renard

This isn't about the YouTube, (#109894)
by Bird Dog

this is about Bill and his contentless diary. The YouTube simply dovetails with months-long Obama/DNC talking points about McCain being a Bush 3rd term. The numbers are beside the point, particularly since--outside of Hagel--McCain has departed from the Bush administration more than any other Republican in Congress. Bill & Co. are playing political games because we have a GOP president with low approval ratings, so partisans like Bill are trying to surgically attach McCain to Bush, metaphorically speaking.

If posting a YouTube with zero diarist content is a standard you find acceptable, then I guess I'll just have to jump in, too. Please tell me how this diary or my entry adds one iota of substance or interesting conversation, and why these kinds of diaries help elevate the discourse here at this site. I'm sure this crap does well at places like dKos. So is dKos Lite what you'd like this site to be? Since the conservative-to-liberal ratio here is low and falling, go ahead and make it dKos Lite, and then you can watch the ratio fall even further.

"I want America to know that I'm, like, totally ready to lead." -- Paris Hilton

Well, the thing is, (#109908)
by dionysus

McCain in like 2001 deviated from Bush a bit. Since then? Not in the slightest, as a matter of fact he spent the last 2 years in competition with the other candidates to deviate from Bush the least.

So either McCain honestly wants a third Bush term, or he doesn't and is shamelessly selling out what he believes in to try and get elected, to the degree of a 180-shift in almost every position he once held.

Take your pick, I don't think the country really wants either.

It's *always* about the youtube (#109896)
by catchy

So I'd appreciate it if you'd take that back.

But I agree that Bill's post coulda been an open thread comment.

Rather than kicking better diaries off the Recent Dairies list yourself, I think you could just make that pt. w/out throwin up a cheap diary.

The point made... (#109910)
by Bird Dog

...was exactly as intended. My diary is just as cheap as Bill's, and I have just as much right and privilege to put up a contentless diary as Bill. The larger issue, of course, is whether or not the contributors really want this quality of diary under "Recent Diaries" or whether we as a community should shoot for a higher standard. It sounds like, judging from the comment made, cheap and contentless is OK.

--

"I want America to know that I'm, like, totally ready to lead." -- Paris Hilton

The largest issue (#109914)
by catchy

is whether you will admit youtube should be the focus of every comment we make + thought we entertain.

On a much smaller issue, I think we agree that diaries would be improved if they weren't merely a run-of-the-mill political spot.

I agree my "diary" makes a better open thread comment (#109899)
by Bill White

FWIW

I also recall proposing a prohibition on such diaries but the idea was rejected.

See my "Fire Charlie Black" diary and also see Bird Dog's comment in response thereto.
