The Clintons, Dubai and Tax Returns
As you probably know Hillary is refusing to release her tax returns until she is damn good and ready to let us see them. The Wall Street Journal brings up some interesting questions about Bill & Hillary Clinton's finances which might be answered if we got to see her 2006 returns. My personal favorite is this one:
The Senator has had her own success, earning more than $5 million for her "Living History" memoir. But the real income source has been the former President, who has been giving $450,000 speeches, and in general parlaying his political fame into personal riches.Mr. Clinton is now trying to unwind a business relationship with billionaire pal Ron Burkle. This deal made him a partner -- along with the ruler of Dubai -- in the Yucaipa Global Fund. How much did Mr. Clinton earn from a partnership with men whose business interests might be affected by the policy actions of a President Hillary Clinton? The Clintons and their accountant know, but the public doesn't.
Dubai? Hillary threw a fit when she found out the ruler of Dubai might be controlling security at our ports. This is part of a statement she released along with Senator Menedez:
The announcement by Dubai Ports World that it will complete the acquisition of operations at six U.S. ports tomorrow but delay control does nothing to alleviate the responsibility of the Bush administration and Congress to block this deal from moving forward. We have a responsibility to examine the troubling facts surrounding this transaction and the broader question that underlies it: Is it in the national security interest of this country to turn over control of critical security assets to a foreign nation? The answer is no.
The Bush administration has ducked this debate by disingenuously claiming that there is no difference between the current port operator, a British company, and Dubai Ports World, which is owned by the government of Dubai. But that claim is simply wrong on its face. There is a vast difference between a publicly traded foreign company that answers to shareholders and a state-owned one that answers to a foreign government.
Publicly traded companies exist for one reason, to make money for their shareholders. And every action they take is designed to further that goal.
Nations, however, act for a variety of reasons - in some cases to make money through state-owned companies, and in other cases to project power, secure strategic interests or defend their own borders.
I hope to see that she and Bill divested from Yucaipa Global Fund since such a business relationship might allow the ruler of Dubai to project power or secure strategic interests with an influential couple who wants to reside in the WH once more. I guess we will find out when Hillary's CPA gets his copier fixed sometime before April 15th and runs off some copies of her tax return.

Obama just annouced that he raised $55,000,000 in February.

| parent )I mean, given the fact that Hillary has to release her tax return before April 15, what benefit is there for Obama to keep hammering this theme? We'll know one way or the other before the PA primary starts, and if there is something negative in HRC's taxes, you can bet the press and the Obama camp will pick it up at that time. Obama stands to win WY & MS handily no matter what happens in the next few days.
I can't see any gain for Obama in making an issue out of this right now. The best case scenario would be that he prepared the ground for a scandal, but that's hardly necessary. It just feels all wrong to me.
Or am I just confused? Is there a way for HRC to delay releasing any tax info until the general election? I'm not clear on the rules and I can't find a good explanation.

)When this arose, HIllary maintained she would released her tax returns during a general election, as she felt it was not necessary or customary to do so during a primary. (Wolfson made this statement on her behalf as recently as February 8.) So let's get that out of the way first. The only reason she is considering releasing the returns on April 15th is because people complained about her refusal to do so in the first place.
Again. She had no plans to release them during the primary campaign until this became an issue. So whatever hammering she received this far has been worth it.
At this point, I suppose, it's a matter of trust. The Pennsylvania primary is on the 22nd. My guess is that HIllary feels it will be a lot tougher to feel the pain of the economically disadvantaged when they get a look at both how much money she's got and how she/they got it. It's about appearances more than any specific malfeasance -- tho' I wouldn't put that past them either. Remember, the Clintons like to live on the edge, politically and in their financial dealings. They're enjoying the Rezko scandal right now. The last thing they want to do is have that spotlight turn in their direction.
Back to trust. What if Hillary announces, with the same aw-shucks wonder she utilized in the last debate, that gosh darn, it turns out that due to paperwork problems, the tax stuff just isn't ready yet. And hey, every American can understand that. This tax stuff can take time.
So. One more time. She's already tried to delay the release until the general. I remain unconvinced that, without her back to the wall, she will do it any earlier than planned.

One thing we should have all learned from the Bushies is that the truth really doesn't matter. If people think Hillary is hiding her tax return because she has something to hide then that perception becomes reality. In fact, Hillary used that exact tactic against her 2000 Senate opponent.
IMO, it is time to get ruthless with Hillary. She decided that the "kitchen sink" rules were in effect so the time for policy discussions is over.

)Hillary has been claiming that her husband didn't have the 1992 Democratic nomination rapped up until June 1992. The New York Times did some digging and it turns out Hillary's memory is faulty again. FTA:
Hillary sure is forgetful. She can't remember that her husband had an "expereience gap" when he ran for Prez in 1992, she can't remember that she pilloried her 2000 Senate opponent for not releasing his tax return, and now she can't remember that Bill's nomination race was wrapped up two months after the Iowa Caucus. Her Alberto Gonzales like ability to forget things is pretty impressive. I guess that is a quality that a successful politician needs.

Even IF there is no wrongdoing in a legal sense, tell me why on earth a famous politician would consort with a man like this — known at the time about to be indicted by Fitzgerald — and do a clearly cozy real estate deal?
Why? Oh, because Obama exercised that stellar judgment he’s always bragging about.

At least John McCain's Keating Five "scandal" was investigated by a Democratic ethics panel and he was found not to have done anything illegal.
See how this works? Do you still want to condone Hillary's kitchen sink approach? She lost the nomination, it was close, but the only person who benefits from continuing her campaign for the WH is Hillary. An in-party knife fight does no one any good.

Look, you guys are going to have to face the fact that approx. 50% of Democratic voters in the primaries voted for Hillary Clinton. The way that you say you won't vote for Clinton? But why give the Clintons, who have a history of, uhm, creative dealings, a pass when it comes to the tax return? Particularly when she was able to loan her own campaign five million dollars.
Transparency is important for both candidates. And while it's not hard to figure HIllary's play -- they're going to hold the tax returns as long as possible, hoping to have the nomination by then, in which case any criticism becomes part of the VRWC -- that doesn't mean we have to accept it.
Trickster wants Rezko to be a major part of this campaign? Okay. But what's good for the goose is good for the rabid badger.

I think most folks whose cheeks aren't flecked with foam are willing to give her a pass on releasing her tax returns at least until April 15th, since I seem to vaguely recall that there is some provision in federal law about not having to do your taxes before then. It was quite a shock for me to realize, about a week ago, that Hillary Clinton, and not John McCain, is more likely to continue that destructive way of thinking.
Say what you will about John McCain but he is no George Bush. McCain works with the other side to get things done. I don't agree with the guy on many things but he deserves a lot of credit for crossing the aisle to effect change. I respect that about him.
Hillary, OTOH, doesn't care what she has to do to win. I don't want that. It isn't good for the country. Our nation is fighting two wars and needs to fix health care and immigration. We can't address those issues properly if we aren't willing to talk to the other side of the political aisle. Hillary's attitude is just going to polarize the country even more.
It is an emotional issue for me. Our country deserves better leaders than we have had for most of my lifetime and Hillary will be more of the same. So, to sum up, I would rather have someone different in the WH than a Democrat in the WH.

If you think that horrible financial policies, horrible Supreme Court justices, horrible military policies and horrible social policies are worth putting up with because you don't feel that Clinton is sufficiently idealistic, you may as well plan on Republican presidencies as far as the eye can see. Bush isn't uniquely evil (although he is uniquely incompetent). Obama isn't uniquely good. They are all politicians, and you settle for the best you can.

Jeeze, can't you guys take the high road? This whining and harping is becoming embarrassing...to the party.
More importantly, to your Candidate.
In the desert
I saw a creature, naked, bestial,
who, squatting upon the ground,
Held his heart in his hands,
And ate of it.
I said, "Is it good, friend?"
"It is bitter bitter," he answered;
"But I like it
Because it is bitter,
And because it is my heart."

)If we have to bash Hillary to pieces in order to make the super delegates so afraid of her that they nominate Obama then the ends justify the means. Why is that tactic OK for Hillary but it not OK for Obama?

It's like Mr Integrity Straight Talk Express having to answer for this or this.

Crane rode his horse up on the ridgeline and sat there with German mauser rounds cutting the air around him. "The Open Boat" is based on Crane's real experience as a shipwrecked Cuban "filibuster" (gun runner). He's in many ways the beginning of gonzo journalism and the live-dangerously school of American letters. A Hemingway prototype.
