Nancy Pelosi thinks the American people are stupid

Thats about the only conclusion I can draw from her proposal to open the Strategic Petroleum Reserve in order to lower gasoline prices. President Bush has been dead set against this idea and he is absolutely right on this point. Unfortunately we're probably going to see plenty of more dumb ideas from politicians about to how to deal with high gasoline prices as the election gets closer.

The SPR was created in 1975 to provide an emergency petroleum reserve for the United States in case an event occurred that disrupted normal supply. When filled to capacity the SPR holds a little more than 700 million barrels of oil. That sounds like a lot but it's only 35 days worth at current consumption rates. (More if you only count imports of course). Releasing oil from the SPR in order to manage prices would be a short term fix and would reduce the ability of the SPR to supply the country in the case of a real emergency. Unless we were satisfied with leaving the SPR in a depleted state we would eventually have to refill it. Since there is essentially no spare production capacity left in the world the refilling process would cause a price spike. The only reason behind the proposal that seems to make any sense is an attempt by Pelosi to obtain a short term electoral advantage for the democrats going into the upcoming elections. Since Mac says I'm partisan I guess I should approve of this but the negatives are just to severe for me to do this.

Smart partisans take a shot at their own party every once in awhile on trivial stuff to bolster their 'independent thinker' status.

But that's just so they can be as hacky as they wanna about more central partisan issues.

I'm watchin you buddy.

You've unmasked me!

Seriously though I think the energy situation in the US is a crisis far larger than most people realize and needs to be addressed without all these political games. That's unlikely to happen though until things get really bad.

I don't think Pelosi really intends to touch SPR. What I think she's trying to do is give congress critters political cover for November – the appearance of 'tried to do something' – knowing full well that it isn't going to fly.

So either way, your title is apt.

Just a suggestion: if you are going to post a diary castigating Speaker Pelosi for promoting a particular proposal or idea, and praising President Bush for resisting same: maybe you just might want to add some, y'know, reasons why "opening the SPR" actually IS a "stupid idea"?

I will freely admit to knowing extremely little about the operations of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve - maybe using it as a short-term price-control mechanism is stupid - or maybe it is a brilliant move, who knows?

But a little more analysis would be very helpful....

To me it relates directly to the argument that ANWR drilling (#104938)

won't have the slightest effect on gas prices, which has been said here a lot.

Yes (#104946)
by Spartacvs

in the sense that drilling in ANWAR or anywhere else for that matter won't have the slightest effect on gas prices in the short term, and neither will dishing out crude from the SPR. It's the same principle used in noise canceling headsets.

I assumed that most people would be familiar with the details of the SPR but there is no particular reason they should be I guess. I'll edit the diary to add some more detail.
