Who would you like to see in the White House as the next President?

How about the VP? Why?

These questions were posed some time back before the primaries started in earnest in a survey of their readership by Professional Pilot magazine.

Following are a choice selection of replies from self identified conservatives (sorry no link).

John McCain with Newt Gingrich as VP, two of the select group of people who grasp the peril this country is facing!

John McCain or Colin Powell would be my choice. Since the President is the CiC I believe a prerequisite is to have served in the military. The biggest issue we face is the security of this country. All else is secondary. No career politician seems to understand this. McCain and Powell are the only ones qualified and experienced enough to do the job. As a retired military officer, I couldn't respect any CiC who hadn't served, or who didn't have our military needs as a priority.

Ronald Reagan? Presumably this guy voted for Bush/Cheney twice, go figure?

I wouldn't like to see any of them in the WH, they are all too liberal for me. The only thing I can say is that the Democrats will kill the economy - and I'm not positive McCain won't either. God help us all.

I would like to see Mike Huckabee become our next President. Huckabee is a man of faith, and faith should have a prominent place in our nation. Huckabee is the role model this country needs. For VP, I'd choose Rush Limbaugh, America's truth detector and doctor of democracy.

Seems to mean preeminent not prominent? are there any presidential candidates who are not self expressed people of faith?

Sen. John McCain would be a great President. I would like to see Colin Powell as his VP. Running the country is a lot like running a military - the only exception is that military leaders don't need to worry about the economy. As McCain has been honest enough to state, he doesn't know much about it - but he is smart enough to know he has cabinet members and staff to rely on.

There were a number of replies expressing support for Colin Powell, seemingly oblivious to the fact that he shredded his credibility and compromised any political future he might have in presenting the Bush Administration's case for WMD before the UN. This reply is fairly typical of those who describe themselves as ex military and still pining for the military dictatorship of their youth.

President? Colin Powell. VP? John McCain. Both are military men, and we're at a time when our nation is disrespected worldwide. Alittle more muscle flexing is required to regain this respect

Well at least he recognizes the problem even as he still struggles for a solution.

President? Mitt Romney. VP? Duncan Hunter. I'm tired of populist left-wing socialists who lack any real leadership or management experience. I do not believe that the uber-rich with anti-American sentiment, such as Soros, Turner and Murdoch, should be allowed to influence our country's politics the way they have recently. Close the borders and deport the illegals.

I would like the next US President to be a person who realizes that current problems are not so bad that they can't be made worse by more taxes and regulation. This person needs to realize that the war against Islamic fascism is our most important immediate struggle and that winning it is vitally important. Winning will not be accomplished by retreat. The next administration should also begin the move away from foreign oil by allowing domestic exploration and drilling, as well as pursuing practical alternatives such as coal gasification and nuclear power. Health care can be improved with increased competition and less regulation. My vote is for John McCain.

I hadn't realized our current energy problems could largely be solved by reversing the choice to purchase foreign oil over domestic exploitation. Who'd a thunk it?

I would have included replies from the scant few supporting Democratic candidates but they were all far too sensible and lacking anything like the same degree of entertainment value. And don't worry, political acumen is not a prerequisite for handling complex machinery.

Given that computers fly the planes, I'm surprised they bothered to ask the meat in the seats anyway. Might as well have asked a wheel or liquor cart. At least the liquor cart has liquor.

it would be easier to accept some of the opinions quoted if indeed they had resulted from a significant liquor intake, but I fear you are right and they are more worryingly the result of sober deliberation.

By the way, while aircraft today are mostly flown by computer - there is no single HAL like interface. Rather there are a series of computers which the meat in the seats must manage and carefully nurture with relevant data. Not that it isn't possible with todays technology to eliminate airborne human interference in the process, just that no such design has yet flown or been proposed outside the military.
