apparently, she walks the walk

a powerful message delivered by a Democrat. the aforementioned comment affirms Sarah's unigue niche in the political theater which we currently find outselves in.

Long notes that "Hillary Clinton was eviscerated by the mainstream media" as her party stood by and talks about how important it is for the children to have a woman as Vice President. it is very difficult to acquire this type of "emotional energy".

over the last two weeks, Palin has energized the GOP base and expanded the McCain campaign to a segment of the population (women) which Republicans have usually experienced some problems with.

the last time, the country experienced this type of energy is when the "Reagan Democrats" (the ethnic Catholics) delivered the White House. and the last time a V.P. candidate delivered the White House was LBJ way back in 60.

it is fair to say that Reagan and Johnson share a common denominator with Palin, the general disdain of the east and west coast elite. advantage McCain-Palin with their "reform message".

with Obama on the attack, will McCain-Palin & Co. pivot to the positive? i expect they will. so far, they have been one step ahead in every shift in this campaign.

I have no doubt that socially conservative women are energized by Palin, but Hillary supporters aren't going to vote for McCain in significant numbers. The PUMAs will be a footnote to history on Nov. 5.

The bias here (#120736)
by Jay C

Lynette Long's, anyway - is pretty blatant: and, IMHO, not particularly noteworthy; except as an example of misguided Identity Politics. The bit about Hillary Clinton being "eviscerated by the mainstream media while the Party stood by" is the giveaway: this is plain PUMA nonsense by a blinkered partisan. Sen. Clinton made a pretty good showing in the primaries despite this "evisceration" - which was nothing compared to the savaging she got from the right-wing media in years past (remember Vince Foster?). The "media was mean to Poor Hillary" whine has always rang tinny - and a couple of months of irrelevancy hasn't rendered it any sounder.

It's an odd diary to see: I can't remember Timmy previously posting any such an encomium to the notion of voting for a candidate based solely on Identity (gender, in this case) before - but then, I guess, when the favored candidate is a right-wing Republican, a certain, umm - flexibility in one's principles can creep in....

She advocates for Hillary the lifelong feminist, then turns around and follows Bush in a skirt. As Newsweek notes,

While she is strongly pro-choice—her mother almost died of an illegal abortion—she said she does not believe that Roe v. Wade would really be threatened by a McCain win. She believes it is more important to take a stand for her gender than to vote on one issue. "The first issue for me is the blatant sexism and treatment of Hillary Clinton," she said.

So she's voting on emotion, rather than the safety of her mother, herself, her sisters, her daughters.

It sure is (#120681)
by Username

one of Palin/McCain's top issues:

John McCain believes Roe v. Wade is a flawed decision that must be overturned, and as president he will nominate judges who understand that courts should not be in the business of legislating from the bench.

Constitutional balance would be restored by the reversal of Roe v. Wade, returning the abortion question to the individual states. The difficult issue of abortion should not be decided by judicial fiat.

However, the reversal of Roe v. Wade represents only one step in the long path toward ending abortion. Once the question is returned to the states, the fight for life will be one of courage and compassion - the courage of a pregnant mother to bring her child into the world and the compassion of civil society to meet her needs and those of her newborn baby. The pro-life movement has done tremendous work in building and reinforcing the infrastructure of civil society by strengthening faith-based, community, and neighborhood organizations that provide critical services to pregnant mothers in need. This work must continue and government must find new ways to empower and strengthen these armies of compassion. These important groups can help build the consensus necessary to end abortion at the state level. As John McCain has publicly noted, "At its core, abortion is a human tragedy. To effect meaningful change, we must engage the debate at a human level."

I'll quote it again, just for you:

the reversal of Roe v.

In summary: reversing Roe allows for abortion bans, which McCain is suddenly ecstatic about. And no, John McCain (or Palin if he croaks) won't overturn the ruling himself -- he'll appoint judges to do that for him, and there are a few seats probably coming up.

oh no i read the whole thing. (#120694)

everybody should be against compassion (#120735)
by boneless

The pro-life movement has done tremendous work in building and reinforcing the infrastructure of civil society by strengthening faith-based, community, and neighborhood organizations that provide critical services to pregnant mothers in need.

He refers to this sort of compassionate, federally-funded neighborhood organization. Did you know that birth control pills work by giving you an abortion every month? Or that abortions cause breast cancer, alcoholism, and going to Hell? Or that condoms provide "no" protection against herpes and only "some" against HIV? Well, don't worry, John McCain will make sure you have access to this important misinformation.

John McCain will seek ways to promote adoption as a first option for women struggling with a crisis pregnancy.

Now, if you're curious about this phrase: "crisis pregnancy center" or why John McCain never uses the phrase "unplanned pregnancy" anywhere on his site, just look at the words. If there's an un-planned pregnancy, that means there's also a planned pregnancy, and that's an endorsement of birth control. Anti-contraception activists came up with "crisis pregnancy" a few years ago to be compatible with the assumption that ALL pregnancies should be unplanned. The only distinction necessary is between married and unmarried, the latter being the crisis.

Not that McCain himself buys any of this, but these are the freaks he's sold his soul (and VP slot) to.

Are you? (#120698)
