Best comment evah! re: Hilton does McCain (#108276)
by Bill White

Steve Benen:

Watching the Hilton video, a few questions came to mind. First, why is that Paris Hilton’s fake ad includes more substantive talk about energy policy than John McCain’s real ad? Second, if writers helped Hilton with her script, and writers helped McCain with his script, why is it that Hilton seems to have a better grasp on policy details than McCain does? Shouldn’t that be, you know, the other way around? And third, why is it that a 27-year-old heiress/reality-show star can read a teleprompter better than the presumptive Republican presidential nominee?

(1) Paris Hilton's spoof ad offers more substance than McCain's real ad;

(2) Why does Hilton seem smarter and sharper than McCain:

(3) McCain better learn to read a teleprompter!

Most racist ad yet (#108117)
by Sulla

If the past week has taught us anything young white women can not dare be compared to black men, but Paris ignored this valuable lesson and offers this-

"Only I'm not from the olden days and I'm not promising change like that other guy. I'm just hot!”

Disgusting. It seems that our society will never grow past young white women and black men being mentioned in the same political ad, the dream has ended.

Needless to Say, Sulla (#108164)
by Harley

I said nothing of the kind. Tho' I guess this too is humor on your part. The Daily Show was making a fair and humorous point about the election. You're doing something different, and something I've noticed elsewhere with B -- the desire to force talking points into any and all contexts, no matter how irrelevant, and using humor to camouflage the act.

It's not a big deal. Just a weird, if predictable, disconnect I've noticed.

--

To think is not enough; you must think of something -- Jules Renard

I'm not the one with the problem here (#108175)
by Sulla

If you actually desire to put on your serious face for a change then the talking point in question is the stupid, and I mean stupid, idea that the McCain celebrity ad had anything to do with race. There are many criticisms that can be leveled at that ad, but as the Daily Show pointed out racism is not one of them. Now it is entirely possible that some of the Obama supporters who called the ad racist were doing so in good faith, trying to remain vigilant against the ugly hand of racism creeping into the election, and that they were overzealous in this particular instance. It is also possible that other Obama supporters cynically labeled the ad racist merely out of the desire to play the race card and garner sympathy for their candidate. Whatever the motivation, for most people polled about it, there is no there there, and Brooks and I are just having a little fun with it. And having fun with this faux outrage is entirely relevant when making fun of the next chronological faux outrage (as Brooks did with the Obama supporters alligator tears for Cindy McCain), just as it is here considering Paris was one of the white women supposedly used as a dog whistle against Obama.

Now the above is just in case you're serious, but I really don't believe you were. I get the feeling you're just playing your usual rhetorical game where you try to slap some label on your opponent's line of argument (weird, sad, predictable, thin witted, unoriginal) and act as if every time you repeat the charge that it is confirmation of your point.

Heh (#108182)

Lotta words. Same circumstance. If you want to shoehorn talking points into irrelevant conversations the choice is yours, humor -- tho' it's charitable to refer to it as such -- is merely the excuse. And the Daily Show has nothing to do with it.

And JFTR, I don't think the Hilton ad was racist. But the problem with ads like that is that you can't control the subtextural messages that sometimes come with them. The Harold Ford ad is a good and more overt example of that.

Hey, if nothing else, your clarification is helpful. You're not mocking the Obama campiagn, just his supporters.

--

To think is not enough; you must think of something -- Jules Renard

The problem is a subtextural message (#108190)
by Sulla

can be anything you want it to be, and as such these types of complaints are completely out the McCain Campaign's control. So I'd say it's the people who worry about the subtextual messages that have the problem. I can just as easily complain about Obama's subtextual arrogance and use the commentary from a number of right wing bloggers as proof of my point, but none of that would actually make it more true. It would all just be part of the same game.

But your response only furthers my doubts that you're the least bit serious here. Making fun of the race grenade which blew up in the faces of the people who threw it at the ad Paris is responding to is not shoehorning, all these things are interrelated. However, you've decided to label it as shoehorning and as such refuse to admit there is any connection. Talk about same circumstances, I've seen this one for years from you. I should probably save myself some time and make a K-code for it.

sounds like Paris is talking about McCain's energy plan. Paris said "limited drilling with environmental safeguards". McCain has said that states should decide on offshore drilling and exploration, which is a form of limited drilling, and I don't think McCain would be in favor of offshore drilling without proper environmental safeguards.
